New Tax Incentives for Applied Air Equipment
There are three new tax incentives for an owner that may apply to Applied Air equipment:

1. Increased Limit on equipment Tax Deductions
2. 50% bonus depreciation if placed in service in 2009
3. Section 179 assets, are personal property

When an asset is part of the "process" it is classified as Section 179. It becomes personal property rather than real estate, and has an accelerated depreciation, providing significant tax savings to the owner. Comfort cooling HVAC does not qualify as Section 179. However, because makeup air is considered part of the process, it might qualify as Section 179.

One example would be a factory with paint or fume exhaust. A DFL is required to offset this exhaust, with no comfort involved. Almost every Applied Air application is a process application.

Please see the entire breakdown below:

Lincoln Associates has been appointed manufacturer’s representative for Koldwave.

Marietta, GAKoldwave, an international manufacturer of portable air-cooled and water-cooled air conditioners, has appointed Lincoln Associates the manufacturer’s representative for Georgia, Tennessee and Alabama. Koldwave, now a division of Mestek, Inc., has been building portable air conditioners for the commercial and industrial market since 1965.

Koldwave portable air conditioners provide emergency, spot or supplemental cooling where and when you need it.  Heat pumps are also available for the water-cooled models.

Including stainless steel cabinets, these units are ideal for rugged industrial environments such as paper mills, as well as motor control, switchgear and telecom centers. Water-cooled units can easily be tied in to cooling tower or process water loops.

With cooling capacities ranging from 10,000 to 65,000 BTUH, the air-cooled Airmaster portable air conditioner is ideal for interior offices, windowless work areas or any commercial location.  Airmaster units provide convenient temperature control for building areas that lack an outside air supply and/or venting for condenser heat.  Water-cooled units are identified as Kompacs and their cooling capacities range from 7,000 BTUH to 26,000 BTUH.

Lincoln Associates is a multi-line manufacturer’s rep firm, established in 1972. Our engineers can provide sales and design assistance on these and other quality products.

Purafil Profiled on Front Page of Gwinnett Business Journal
Purafil President/CEO Jim Mash appears on the cover of the May issue of the Gwinnett Business Journal. The issue features the article, "Breathing easier: Purafil cleans air in buildings across the globe," and highlights the company's global successes within its 40-year history despite its small-town surroundings. In the article, Mr. Mash explains, "The fact that we are so diversified from a geographic standpoint is one of our strengths."

After experiencing food odors originating from the kitchen, Vincent Alfieri, director of engineering for the Georgia Tech Hotel and Conference Center, a local Purafil enduser, was also quoted.
"Purafil came out and redesigned our outside air units and made a filtration system that eliminated odors. They've done a good job for us."

Georgia Tech Branch Tours New Food Processing Technology Building
The Tech Student Branch toured the new Food Processing Technology Building in Tech’s newly developing West Campus on October 31, 2006. This beautiful new building houses research labs that focus primarily on the food processing industry.

The dozen participating students were welcomed by Mr. Wayne Daley, the associate lab director, who is probably known to some Atlanta ASHRAE members for his work on energy conservation and solar energy. After welcoming the students, he explained the lab’s role and mission and discussed HVAC issues in food processing. Students found his comments about the critical role of refrigeration in poultry processing and the lab’s work on industrial control using machine vision to be especially interesting and were intrigued with the current work on online detection of contamination, maybe a technology with HVAC security applications.

An HVAC technical program was also included in the tour. Atlanta ASHRAE member and past President Chris Page of Lincoln Associates briefed the student tour group on the desiccant based humidity control system used in the high performance environmental test chamber used by the Food Processing Technology Lab.

Atlanta ASHRAE member and past President Chris Page of Lincoln
Associates briefs the student tour group on the desiccant based
humidity control system used in the lab’s high performance
environmental test chamber.

The tour also included a stop by the high bay area where students
inspected the environmental test chamber.

After inspecting the test chamber, the group took a look at the HVAC system in the building. One unusual feature in such a small building is the smoke evacuation system for the entrance atrium. The students discussed the function of the exhaust fans and the intake and exhaust dampers in smoke control and then moved outside to look at the air cooled chiller that serves the building.

In the first floor mechanical room students saw the hot and chilled water pump and the gas-fired hot water generator. They finished their tour on the second floor mechanical room where they looked at the air processing equipment.

Students are inspecting the largest AHU in the Food Tech building.

In all, a great tour and excellent pizza were had by all. The group appreciates Atlanta ASHRAE for providing refreshments, Chris Page for the technical talk, Wayne Daley for the opening comments, and Craig Fritz of the Tech Facilities Department for accompanying us and discussing the HVAC equipment. They also appreciate Doug Britton and Kristi Spivey of GTRI for helping with arrangements. Special thanks are due to Steve Bruning, Bill Dean, and Todd Mowinski of Newcomb and Boyd, who were the mechanical and HVAC consultants on this building. Todd provided some helpful engineering details, and Steve and Bill gave briefing about some technical details by phone. Finally thanks to Craig Wyvill, the lab director, for welcoming The Tech Student Branch to the facility and providing them with every necessity needed for successful presentation and tour.

New! New! New! Applied Air Announces an Exciting New Product!

In case you haven’t heard, “Dedicated Outdoor Air Systems” or “DOAS” units are a big deal these days.  Whether it’s the ASHRAE Journal, Engineered Systems, or an engineering class at a major university, the discussion of preferred solutions to today’s building air quality issues comes down to the use of the DOAS concept.

It only makes sense…separate the outside air requirement from the rest of the building load and then treat the outside air to control humidity, temperature, and outside air contaminants in the most efficient manner available.  The new IFL from Applied Air is designed to do just that!

How big is the market?  Where can you sell one of these?  The answers are: “huge” and “everywhere”.  ASHRAE Standard 62.1-2004 (already adopted by the Uniform Mechanical Code) specifies the use of fresh, filtered, tempered outside air for every occupied non-residential building in the United States.  LEED NC 2.2 (the international energy efficiency and building performance certification program) requires that all certified buildings meet Standard 62.1 requirements as a prerequisite to earning certification.  LEED NC 2.2 is a requirement for all government buildings in California, Washington, Oregon, and individual cities all across the United States.

Roberts-Gordon First to Introduce Modulating Infrared Heating Systems for Enhanced Fuel Savings
Buffalo, New York - Roberts-Gordon, an international manufacturer of low and high intensity, gas-fired infrared heating equipment for over 35 years, introduces the ROBERTS GORDON® ULTRAVAC™ Controls for the company’s CORAYVAC® infrared heaters. The company is the first to patent true modulating infrared systems with these controls.

ROBERTS GORDON® ULTRAVAC™ Controls save building owners money on fuel bills due to the controller’s ability to modulate burner input rate with outdoor air temperature to match the heating system’s input to the building’s heat requirement. Modulation of the burners-in-series occurs by varying vacuum and adjusting gas and combustion air equally which ensures proper combustion.

The multi-feature zone temperature sensor provides localized control resulting in additional comfort and convenience for building occupants. Also, the PC-based software package provides total heating system management from your desktop. The optional modem provides remote system management enabling building owners to monitor multiple heating systems, in any location throughout the country, from their desktops.

In addition to the corporate headquarters in Buffalo, Roberts-Gordon also has facilities in Canada and the U.K. Lincoln Associates is the manufacturer’s rep in the southeastern US. Roberts-Gordon's additional gas-fired infrared products include CORAYVAC®, VANTAGE® II, VANTAGE® EV, VANTAGE® HE, VANTAGE® TF, GORDONRAY® BH, GORDONRAY® NP, CARIBE® and GORDONGLO.
